{"id":7,"date":"2006-04-19T01:15:06","date_gmt":"2006-04-19T09:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.miscdebris.net\/blog\/?p=7"},"modified":"2006-05-04T23:25:11","modified_gmt":"2006-05-05T07:25:11","slug":"disable-autorun-for-cddvd-drives-to-prevent-root-kits-to-install-themselves-automatically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.miscdebris.net\/blog\/2006\/04\/19\/disable-autorun-for-cddvd-drives-to-prevent-root-kits-to-install-themselves-automatically\/","title":{"rendered":"Disable autorun for CD\/DVD drives to prevent root-kits to install themselves automatically"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you enter an audio CD or DVD into the CD\/DVD drive of your Windows computer, you might install in that moment a root-kit of a copy control program, which prevents you to copy the audio content, or even worse, makes your system unstable and unsecure.<\/p>\n<p>There are two possibilities to prevent Windows from autoplaying the CD\/DVD:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/q155217\">Hack in the registry<\/a> (provided by Microsoft):\n<ul>\n<li>Click <strong>Start<\/strong>, click <strong>Run<\/strong>, type regedit in the <strong>Open<\/strong> box, and then press ENTER.<\/li>\n<li>Locate and click the following registry key:<br \/>\n<strong>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\ Services\\CDRom<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To disable automatically running CD-ROMs, change the <strong>Autorun<\/strong> value to 0 (zero). To enable automatically running CD-ROMs, change the <strong>Autorun<\/strong> value to 1.<\/li>\n<li>Restart your computer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windowsxp\/downloads\/powertoys\/xppowertoys.mspx\">Download Tweak UI<\/a> (also from Microsoft), install and run it. Choose My Computer->AutoPlay->Types. Uncheck &#8220;Enable Autoplay &#8230;&#8221; for CD drives and removeable drives if you wish.
